Upon deciding to pursue the career of teaching, the response I received from many of the people I confided in was a raised eyebrow and a smirk. Why would anyone choose to spend all of their time with confused adolescents? The answer is simple. It makes me feel like I am making this world a better place.
From the experiences I have gathered while traveling, I have gained an understanding of the importance of maintaining a quality education system in my community. This importance reaches not only into the personal benefit of the students who I touch with my lessons, but expands to the social, political, and economic stability of a nation. Countries like India and Guatemala could gain immensely by improving the quality of their school systems.
This isn’t to say that I feel that every student should be educated with an entirely familiar type of education. Different students call for different learning experiences. In third world countries like India and Guatemala, for example, the rural areas could benefit from instruction in crop rotation to maintain balanced soil. In America, reaching students will require the teacher to go beyond the frameworks and the demands of the school. This will require tapping into the interests of those confused adolescents and igniting the flame of knowledge.
It is important to note that every single student can learn… and once they are taught to seek knowledge independently, they are set on a course to benefit the community as a whole.
